If looking to explore the “other Mykonos”, then this is surely the place to start from. Located on the northern side of the island, this pure and unspoiled by civilisation small sandy cove bears no resemblance to its neighbouring cosmopolitan Panormos beach. Here you will spend your day lying on the golden sand and diving in and out the emerald waters, snorkelling, reading a book, relaxing, and truly getting in touch with nature, without a sunbed, an umbrella or a beach-bar in sight. Like a glimpse through time of the olden Mykonos days, this small slice of heaven never gets crowded, while just next to it lies an even smaller hidden bay, where you may get a chance to be absolutely alone. Here pets are allowed, so you can bring your doggy along, but do keep in mind that you must come well equipped with your own umbrella or shed, sunscreen, cold water and some snacks, if you are planning to stay the day (and when you see this place, trust us you will want to stay all day!). Just above the beach, you will find one of the island’s most original and cult spots, the famous Kiki’s Tavern, which operates without electricity and takes no reservations. You may need to wait for quite a while in line for a table, but the authentic Greek cuisine will surely make it up to you.
Over the one end of the heavenly and unspoiled gold-sanded beach of Aghios Sostis, where the island’s insiders and savants come to swim naked at the edge of the small cove and feel one with mother nature, stands a traditional tavern that looks more like a treehouse, has no electricity, no phone and applies a strict “first come, first serve” policy. Here the day starts at about 12 and ends when the sun starts to set its beams in the sea, as Kiki’s Tavern operates only on daylight. Everything, including the famous steaks and the pork chops, is cooked in the stone-built grill outside, while you can visit the small inside area to pick your salads from a vast variety of greeneries and cold dishes. It is almost definite that you will find a line of people formed just outside, in which through the years numerous celebrities have patiently waited for their turn to the few tables on the veranda with the trees and the magnificent views. Be patient, drink some wine and enjoy the scenery, the Kiki’s Tavern experience will surely worth your while.
