Fokos

If you have seen pictures of people riding on beautiful horses on thick sand next to crystal-clear dark blue waters in Mykonos, this is exactly where those pictures were taken. Fokos is a small cove with feral beauty on the northern part of the island, where your mobile probably will be out of signal and horseback riding excursions often end their route. Located about 13km from Mykonos Town, you will need about 20-30 minutes to get here by car, but it is totally worth it. Τhis is the absolute best choice on days without wind for people seeking for a peaceful, relaxing and kind of isolated beach experience even on the busiest high-season days. There is no need to say that you will not be seeing sunbeds with matching umbrellas here, so do make sure to bring your own means of shading along. But you will find amazing Greek dishes and inspired fresh salads at the one and only -literally as it is the only one here- Fokos Tavern, which is ideal for a delicious after-swimming feast.

Standing there from the early 2000s, this remote and secluded tavern holds the key to the ultimate Greek summer experience. Far away from the loud and glamourous Mykonos party scene, here you will find yourself diving in and out the pristine waters all day long and then taking a seat at a perfect view table with the sand still between your toes and your hair still wet from the sea. Go for the zucchinis with the homemade tzatziki, the black-eyed peas and the local luza served with figs. Do not miss the fresh salads with local greeneries and herbs, and of course the amazing grilled fish caught straight from the sea, while meat lovers will also have a blast with the beef patties and pork chops. The shrimp saganaki (shrimps cooked with tomato and feta cheese) is also an absolute must, as well as the homemade desserts, such as the cakes and of course the ice-cream made with local milk. In the Fokos Tavern kitchen they like healthy eating and clean counters, so you will not be finding fried dishes here, which is so cool, if you come to think of it!
